Church in the Grass Beliefs in Brief
The Bible is true.
God is the creator of all things and is in control of everything.
Jesus was born to a virgin; lived a sinless life; taught us about God, taught us about each other, taught us about love, taught us about loving God, taught us about loving each other.
Jesus died on the cross, absorbing the wrath of God that was due to us for our sins.
Jesus rose from the dead.
Jesus returned to Heaven and is now at the right hand of the father (God).
Jesus our Lord will return to judge the world.
The Holy Spirit reveals our sin nature and leads us to our Savior.
The Holy Spirit is in every believer and leads us on God’s path.
Man is made in God’s image, for God.
Man has been sinful since the first man sinned in the Garden of Eden.
People cannot do enough "good" to be clean of sin.
Salvation is given by God’s grace, through faith in the Savior, Jesus Christ.
People cannot be so bad that they cannot be saved, so long as they come into a true faith in Jesus Christ.
Those who do not have a faith in Jesus Christ, as their Savior and Lord will be forever separated from God on the Day of Judgment.
All Christians should be baptized, going public with their faith and dependence on Jesus.
Baptism is symbolic of the death of our “old selves” and the resurrection of our lives — to be lived for the work of the Kingdom.
Christians continue to grow in maturity of faith in Christ throughout our lives.
Christians are called to be members of a church body to carry on the work of the Kingdom here on earth. We are to help one another through our struggles, strengthen one another’s faith and carry the message of God’s love and redemption to those who have not yet found Him.
Christians take communion bread and wine (juice) in order to remember the death of our Lord for us. It is a time of grateful celebration and a time of spiritual examination.
Church in the Grass Statement of Beliefs (Long Form)
We believe that:
The Bible
— The Bible was written by people who were inspired by God.— The Bible is a true, infallible and authoritative illumination of the will of God for His people.
God is seen in the Trinity — The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit
— God the Father is the Creator and Ruler of the Universe.— Jesus Christ is the Son of God and is eternally an equal part of the Trinity.
— Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born to the Virgin Mary.
— Jesus showed us the perfect will of God, untainted by sin.
— Jesus, God in the flesh, was tempted but did not sin.
— Jesus was killed on the cross and, since He was without sin, He took with him the penalty that was due to all of humanity for our sin nature.
— Jesus was buried and was resurrected three days later.
— Jesus returned in His resurrection body to meet with His disciples.
— Jesus was then taken to Heaven where He sits at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us sinners.
— Jesus will one day return to judge the world. On that day everyone, believers and non-believers, will understand and confess that Jesus is Lord.
— Salvation through the redemptive work of Jesus is available to all who believe in Him.
— The Holy Spirit is eternally an equal part of the Trinity.
— The Holy Spirit reveals the sin nature and the need for a savior to humanity.
— The Holy Spirit lives within Christians to be a guide and counselor to believers — giving us the wisdom to make Christ centered decisions and equipping us with gifts for the furthering of God’s kingdom.
Man
— Man is made in the image of God, to be like him in character.— Man is the greatest object of God’s creation. Even though man has the potential for good, he has — due to the original sin of Adam — been infused with an attitude of disobedience toward God. This attitude cuts off the relationship between God and man.
Salvation
— Salvation is by grace through faith. It is a gift from God to man. Man can never make up for his sin by self-improvement or good works. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God's sacrifice for our forgiveness can man be saved from sin's penalty.Baptism
— Baptism is a public profession of faith in Christ. Everyone who repents and believes in Christ are to be baptized by immersion.— Baptism is symbolic of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. It is a declaration to the world that we have died to sin and have been raised with Christ to walk in newness of life.
Sanctification
— Sanctification is the experience, beginning at the time of salvation, in which the believer is set apart to God's purposes and is enabled to grow in spiritual maturity through the aid of the Holy Spirit dwelling in him. Growth in grace continues throughout the saved person's life. The Church
— The members of the church are those who have trusted by faith the finished work of Christ.
— The purpose of the church is to glorify God by loving him. This Love is expressed by:
— Praising all that He has done.
— Worshiping all that He is.
— Equipping new believers by teaching all of the Scriptures in a way that leads to changed lives and
— By making the saving work of Jesus Christ known to the lost world.
— Worshiping all that He is.
— Equipping new believers by teaching all of the Scriptures in a way that leads to changed lives and
— By making the saving work of Jesus Christ known to the lost world.
Communion
— Communion includes the bread and cup. Symbolic of the body and blood of Christ. Communion is a memorial of Christ's sufferings on the cross and a celebration of our salvation. It is an opportunity for a believer to examine himself and experience forgiveness. If there is a difference of interpretation of the Scriptures it is not due to a failing of Scriptures, rather it is due to the fallibility of human intellect.
